Bowen Byram and JJ Peterka each scored twice as the Buffalo Sabres defeated the Ottawa Senators 5-1.

The Buffalo Sabres defeated the Ottawa Senators 5-1 on Tuesday thanks to two goals from JJ Peterka and two more from defenseman Bowen Byram on the power play.

In addition, Peterka got an assist, which was his third NHL three-point performance. Tage Thompson of Buffalo fired 11 shots on goal, scored one goal, and assisted on another.

Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made 37 saves, Ryan McLeod and defender Rasmus Dahlin each had two assists, as the Sabres ended their three-game losing run.

Brady Tkachuk, the captain, extended his point run to five games with an assist and a goal from Ridly Greig of Ottawa in the second period.

The Senators have now dropped five of their past six away games (1-5-0), with Linus Ullmark recording 29 saves.

At 6:37 of the first period, Jason Zucker set up Peterka, who swiftly wristed the puck off Ullmark to give the Sabres the lead.

Just 17 seconds into the second period, McLeod produced a flawless feed to Byram, who beat Ullmark with a wrist shot to increase Buffalo’s advantage.

At 7:31 of the second, Greig pushed in his own rebound to give Ottawa a response. But early in the third quarter, Buffalo answered with two swift goals.

Byram’s shot from close to the blue line went past Ullmark to score the goal just 21 seconds into the third.

Thompson scored his team-leading eighth goal of the season shortly after, scoring in an odd manner as the ball deflected off his shoulder and into the net as he fell in the frame.

At 12:08 in the third period, Peterka completed the victory with a one-timer from the right circle.
