Alejandro Osuna, a hitting prospect for the Texas Rangers, had a successful Arizona Fall League season.

When the AFL wrapped up regular-season play earlier this week, he was one of the award winners.

The Dernell Stenson Sportsmanship Award, which is bestowed to a player who best demonstrates selflessness, diligence, and leadership, was announced to have gone to Osuna. It bears the name of a former baseball player who was slain during the 2003 AFL season in Arizona.

Due to a fantastic season that saw him named the Rangers minor league player of the year, Osuna was already well-known when he moved to Arizona.

In the AFL, where he was one of the league’s top hitters, he only improved upon that.

With a final slash line of.306/.438/.449, he tied for second place in hits (30), runs (25) and doubles (8) and led the AFL in walks (22). He played for Surprise, much like the other Rangers prospects.

Osuna entered the AFL season as the Rangers’ No. 16 overall prospect per MLB Pipeline. As Texas approaches the 2025 season, that may change.

The outfielder had a breakout season in 2024 with High-A Hickory and Double-A Frisco following three strong seasons in the Rangers’ organization.

He ended with a career-high 18 home runs and 61 RBI, along with a slash line of.292/.362/.507/.869 overall. His player profile was compared to that of Alex Verdugo of the New York Yankees by MLB.com. He had 17 thefts as well.

He topped in OPS and slugging percentage among Texas minor league players with at least 300 at-bats. After being promoted to Frisco on June 28, he likewise shown improvement at the plate, hitting.306/.379/.523/.902 with nine home runs and 32 RBI.

Osuna is most likely not going to assist the Rangers for at least a year. However, his strong performance in the AFL nearly guarantees him a position on the Triple-A Round Rock roster in 2025 and a non-roster invitation to Major League spring training.

In 2020, the Rangers acquired him from Mexico for $125,000. Because he was the nephew of former major leaguer Antonio Osuna and the younger brother of former All-Star closer Roberto Osuna, he was noticed by other clubs.
