The Dallas Cowboys, according to some, have reached their lowest point. Head coach Mike McCarthy is simply counting down the days till he loses his job, the club is 3-7 and on a five-game losing run, and quarterback Dak Prescott is sidelined for the season. Jerry Jones, the team’s owner, will undoubtedly have his hands full in the summer as he retools the squad in hopes of making another playoff push in 2025 and may even look for a new head coach. Jones will have to make a number of difficult choices, but Terry Bradshaw, a Fox Sports commentator, thinks the solution to one of them is really very straightforward. “My answer on the Dallas problems – they need more talent,” Bradshaw said on “Fox NFL Sunday.” “I don’t know how you guys feel about this, but I would sign their excellent outside rusher, Micah Parsons, even though he is currently in his fourth year; next season would be his fifth. Get an additional No. 1 (draft pick) by trading him.
Logistically, Bradshaw’s notion makes logic, but Cowboys supporters probably don’t want to hear it. Parsons is one of the best edge-rushers in the NFL and is widely regarded as the heart and soul of the Dallas defense. Parsons has the fourth-most sacks (43.5) in the NFL since his rookie season in 2021, trailing only Nick Bosa (51.5), Myles Garrett (53) and T.J. Watt (54.5). In addition, he has led the club in pressures, hurries, and sacks in each of his first three seasons, averaging 86.6, 56.3, and 13.5 each year, respectively. The Cowboys defense often performs at its best when he is. However, there is a price for retaining Parsons. Parsons probably wants to be the best paid player at his position, which will cost Dallas at least the same $34 million a year as Bosa, if not more, given the top five pass-rushers all get $25 million annually. In addition to saving the Cowboys a ton of money, trading Parsons and obtaining another first-round selection would enable them to address one of several needy positions, including linebacker, defensive line, and running back.
