The Mets Have Completed Another A Two-Year, $34 Million Deal With Right-Handed Pitcher
The Mets have signed a right-handed pitcher to a two-year, $34 million contract.
On Wednesday, Frankie Montas and the New York Mets signed a two-year, $34 million contract.
With a player option for an additional $17 million in 2026, the seasoned right-handed pitcher will make $17 million in 2024. On road trips, he will also be provided with a hotel suite.
This past season, Montas, who turns 32 in March, pitched for the Cincinnati Reds and Milwaukee Brewers, going 7-11 with a 4.84 ERA and 148 strikeouts in 150 2/3 innings across 30 starts.
The Brewers acquired him right before the July 30 deadline, and he went 3-3 with a 4.55 ERA in 11 starts. His strikeout percentage increased from 19% to 28.7% when he joined Milwaukee.
Montas accepted a $2 million buyout last month after declining a $20 million mutual option.
In a statement, Mets President of Baseball Operations David Stearns said, “We are thrilled to have Frankie join the team and add a quality arm to our major league rotation.” “Some of the finest stuff in the game has been displayed by Frankie over his career. He will provide our pitching staff a steady presence and
may have an impact both on and off the field.
The Mets still need to improve their rotation despite Montas joining the squad. Sean Manaea, Luis Severino, and Jose Quintana became free agents after helping the team reach the National League Championship Series this year.
In addition, the Mets want to strengthen their bullpen in order to accommodate closer Edwin Díaz. Additionally, despite hitting 34 home runs this season, veteran first baseman Pete Alonso was released as a free agent.
At the end of last month, the organization signed first baseman Joey Meneses and left-handed reliever Génesis Cabrera to minor league contracts. A big league spring training invitation was extended to both players.
In nine seasons in the big leagues, Montas has a 44-46 record with a 4.09 ERA in 129 starts and 31 relief appearances. He has also been a member of the New York Yankees, Oakland Athletics, and Chicago White Sox.
