“I think our ownership has consistently demonstrated that there’s going to be resources when we need them,” Stearns stated. “There is the ability for us to make baseball moves when we think they’re there to improve the team, and we’re going to continue to pursue a wide variety of areas to continue to improve our team.”
In the event that Alonso does not re-sign, it is theoretically possible to move Mark Vientos, a 2024 breakthrough star, from third base to first base, but Stearns stated that he thought of Vientos as a third baseman.
The Mets have signed right-handers Frankie Montas and Clay Holmes for the starting rotation, added outfielder Jose Siri, and lost right-hander Luis Severino to the A’s in free agency thus far this summer.
Although Stearns acknowledged that there is “room” for an additional starting pitcher, he does not think “it’s a necessity.” Jose Quintana and Sean Manaea, two left-handers who were important contributors in 2024, are still free agents. The other experienced free agent starters are Walker Buehler, Jack Flaherty, Max Fried, and Corbin Burnes.
Roki Sasaki, a Japanese star, was formally posted to Major League Baseball teams on Monday. He will be free to sign with any team starting on Tuesday.
In addition to Montas and Holmes, the Mets’ rotation alternatives include Jose Butto, who came out of the bullpen in 2024, Paul Blackburn, Tylor Megill, and David Peterson.
