“An incredible ride”: Jozy Altidore, Tracy McGrady, and Vince Carter talk about being Buffalo Bills owners
WKBW, Buffalo, New York — Among the new Buffalo Bills ownership group members, they are the most identifiable faces.
For the first time since being introduced as one of ten new limited partners in our hometown team, former NBA players Vince Carter and Tracy McGrady, together with MLS champion Jozy Altidore, spoke to media on Thursday.
According to Carter, who is a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame, “It’s just been an unbelievable ride and just a great opportunity,” speaking to reporters over Zoom.
Altidore, a former soccer player for the U.S. National Team and an MLS champion, continued, “I am extremely thankful for this opportunity and feel extremely fortunate to have it.”
“This is just something that we wanted to do and the Bills came to a head and it was just the perfect match with our ties being in Toronto for all three of us,” said McGrady, who is also inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame.
And the Bills want to capitalize on those connections to Toronto.
The Greater Toronto Area was home to Carter, McGrady, and Altidore for many years. Carter and McGrady were players for the Toronto Raptors, while Altidore was a member of Toronto FC. As the Pegulas and the Bills try to grow their fan base in Southern Ontario, the group thinks experience will be helpful.
“To be honest, I think it’s going to be a really fun part, reintroducing ourselves to that market because we all had wonderful memories there, and now with a different, you know, end game, which is now the Buffalo Bills,” Altidore said.
“Back in the day Thurman Thomas and Bruce Smith used to come to our games and sit courtside and watch us,” Carter said. “You understand what the Argos mean to Toronto, but at the same time, as I mentioned to the Pegula family, it’s just, now if you just get those fans to feel wanted and you make them aware of the Bills, you now pique the interest of more people to now pay attention.”
In addition, the group wants to use their decades of professional sports experience to help current Bills players and set an example for the upcoming generation of athletes on inclusion and diversity in professional sports ownership.
