With first baseman Christian Walker off the board, where does that leave Pete Alonso?
Walker agreed to a three-year, $60 million agreement with the Houston Astros. He has been one of the finest all-around first basemen in baseball, winning three consecutive Gold Gloves and hitting 95 home runs over that timeframe during his career with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The focus now shifts to Alonso’s landing spot.
MLB insider reports Pete Alonso may not be able to sign until early 2025.
Alonso’s alternatives seem to be decreasing. The Bronx Bombers would have to give up two draft selections to sign Alonso, thus the New York Yankees are allegedly in negotiations with former National League MVP Paul Goldschmidt. They previously had to forfeit two choices for signing ace Max Fried to an eight-year, $218 million deal.
It’s unlikely that the Diamondbacks would pay Alonso the amount he wants, and after missing out on Walker, it’s difficult to imagine the Seattle Mariners providing the four-time All-Star a deal.
There is still the possibility of a reunion with the New York Mets, but at what price?
Mark Feinsand of MLB.com described Alonso on MLB Network as “sort of a man without a market at the moment.”Similar: Is Pete Alonso’s tenure with the New York Mets coming to an end? According to reports, the team “engaged in talks” with this consecutive All-Star first baseman.
