Days after pledging to the Gamecocks, the transfer LB pledges to another SEC school.
Andrew Jones, a linebacker for Grambling State, declared his commitment to South Carolina late on Wednesday night. Deal done? Apparently not. Less than 48 hours after Jones pledged his promise to South Carolina, the 6-foot-2, 220-pound linebacker said on Friday night that he was reversing his Ole Miss vow during a visit to Oxford.
Using information from the NCAA transfer site, South Carolina filled the two starting guard positions on their squad this year. Since Torricelli Simpkins and Kamaar Bell are leaving the Gamecocks after one season, offensive line coach Lonnie Teasley may decide to replace those voids with some freshmen from high school or reopen the Portal to find more seasoned players.
The latter is what he is doing.
Rodney Newsom (6-3 303), a transfer guard from Western Kentucky, has joined the Gamecocks, who already signed Wake Forest transfer guard Nick Sharpe. Following an official visit last weekend, Newsom made his promise public Tuesday evening. Following the offer from Teasley, Newsom made no further formal visits.
Newsom did not play a snap in 2022 after redshirting in 2021 at Memphis, where he started his career. For the 2023 season, he then moved to Itawamba JC, MS. He started the last eleven games, including the Boca Raton Bowl, and participated in all 14 of Western Kentucky’s games this past season.
He should have two years of eligibility with the Gamecocks, as he was labeled as a redshirt sophomore at Western Kentucky this season.
The Gamecocks now have 32 freshmen in their 2025 class, including four offensive lineman thanks to Newsom.
