Throughout the offseason, the Houston Astros have been active, acquiring Christian Walker and moving Kyle Tucker. The Astros have now added a former Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher to strengthen their bullpen.
According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, Miguel Castro has joined Houston. We don’t yet know the details of his deal.
Throughout the 2024 season, Castro struggled with shoulder tendinitis, making only 11 appearances. When healthy, the right-hander pitched 13.2 innings with a 5.93 ERA and an 8/3 K/BB ratio.
Castro is still a highly regarded veteran even though he isn’t the league’s most exciting reliever. It’s obvious that the Astros are relieved that he is no longer dealing with injuries. In the latter innings, Houston will have another useful player if he can return to his workhorse ways.
Houston just finished the 2024 season with a 3.66 bullpen ERA, good for sixth place in the league. Additionally, they tied for 10th place in the league with a batting average of.228. They could try to become better at walking (218, 14th) and striking out (592, 16th), but it’s obvious the Astros have a strong bullpen base.Castro, however, shown his tenacity by playing in a league-high 75 games the year before. He had a 60/25 K/BB ratio and an ERA of 4.31. Castro has a 4.20 ERA and a 410/233 K/BB ratio across his ten-year MLB career.
The Astros still want to be a postseason contender, even if their roster will look entirely different, particularly with Alex Bregman presumably out. In addition to having a big league player in Isaac Paredes back in their Tucker trade, they have made a huge boost at first place. Every indication is that Houston will once again be a strong contender.
Miguel Castro cannot make the Astros world-beaters on his alone. But for a team trying to strengthen their bullpen, he is a logical addition. Castro, who battled through injuries in 2024, will soon have a chance to establish himself with a different team.
