Former Auburn QB Shades Coaching Staff After Committing To Auburn Tigers Read More

Due to a couple transfer portal departures, Auburn’s quarterback room will be a little smaller this offseason. After the 2024 season ended, a few of the Tigers’ quarterbacks decided to quit the program.

Among those signal callers was Walker White, who joined Holden Geriner and Hank Brown as reserves. He committed to a new school this week.

Following that pledge, White talked with ESPN. He has nothing but praise for the coaching staff, especially Jake Spavital, the quarterback coach and offensive coordinator. He launched some backhanded jabs at Hugh Freeze and company in the process.

The remark on quarterback development was taken as an insult by many. Under center, Auburn undoubtedly had a difficult 2024. Payton Thorne, the starter, was erratic and prone to turnover all season long.

After a four-interception performance against Cal, he was benched, and Hank Brown briefly took over before being demoted to backup duty as well.

The Tigers’ performance was disappointing regardless of who was in the starting lineup. In the end, Auburn had a 5-7 season. There is considerable validity to Walker White’s worries regarding quarterback development.

Payton Thorne transferred from Michigan State to play under Hugh Freeze for two seasons. After the change, he saw a sharp decline in his Tigers stats.

Nevertheless, aside from that temporary benching, he did experience growth as a senior. Regretfully, it wasn’t sufficient to advance the Tigers to the postseason.

Thorne has now used up his last season of eligibility and is no longer available. The portal has been accessed by three reserves. At quarterback, Coach Freeze and his offensive staff have a small roster. With a young passer, he will now need to test those developmental skills.

Fortunately, talent will not be in short supply. Deuce Knight, a four-star signal caller, committed to Auburn, while Jackson White, a highly regarded transfer, said on Instagram that he will play for the Baylor Bears next season. He is enthusiastic about the future and need to be considered for the QB1 battle right now.
