A former Kentucky coach is promoted to NC State and given a position there.
Kurt Roper, a former coach at Kentucky, will be elevated to offensive coordinator for the Wolfpack, NC State said Monday. After Robert Anae was sacked by NC State, he would also be given play-calling responsibilities.
Our offensive coaching staff is undergoing significant adjustments.
Roper coached the quarterbacks for just one season at Kentucky. Joker Phillips, who would go on to become head coach, was his offensive coordinator. Rich Brooks was the Wildcats’ head coach at the time. During that season, Roper collaborated with the Wildcats’ starting quarterback, Andre Woodson.
Fans of Kentucky don’t often recall that time period well, as the Wildcats finished 3-8 with only two SEC conference victories in 2005. Many people will remember the next year because Brooks was able to turn the program around with a 7-5 season in 2007 and an 8-5 the following year. Philips took over when Brooks resigned in 2008, and the program relapsed into a state of disarray.
After playing for Kentucky in 2005, Roper left to become Tennessee’s running backs coach. He remained there until 2007, when he was hired by Duke as an offensive coordinator. He has been at NC State since 2019, however he traveled about a little after that. Since his time at Florida in 2014, this will be his first chance to direct plays and serve as offensive coordinator. However, he served as South Carolina’s co-offensive coordinator from 2016 to 2017 and as the Colorado Buffaloes’ interim head coach in 2018. The NC State Wolfpack are giving him another chance after he’s had a successful stint in collegiate football.
