Pete Alonso’s journey through free agency has been nothing short of dramatic. Initially regarded as the premier first baseman on the market, Alonso’s allure seemed undeniable. However, with a rumored price tag hovering around $150 million, many teams hesitated to commit. As other top first basemen signed deals elsewhere, Alonso’s list of potential landing spots has dwindled, leaving the New York Mets as the frontrunner in the race to secure his services.
Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller recently highlighted the Mets as a prime candidate to retain Alonso, despite speculation that the team might move on. “Even though there has been a lot of talk lately of the New York Mets being willing to move on from re-signing Pete Alonso, it still seems the Polar Bear will most likely return to Queens,” Miller explained. “Between their seemingly limitless budget, the success he has had there, their need for a corner infielder, and the apparent lack of anyone else willing to shell out the big bucks to acquire Alonso, it all still points to the Mets eventually making it happen.”
A reunion between Alonso and the Mets appears logical. The team has an undeniable void at first base, and the gap between the two sides on a potential deal may not be insurmountable. If Mets owner Steve Cohen is prepared to increase his offer slightly, Alonso’s return to Queens seems probable. However, if negotiations falter, the San Francisco Giants could emerge as a formidable contender, ready to swoop in and lure the slugger to the West Coast.
With the offseason nearing its climax, all eyes remain on Alonso and the Mets as they navigate what could be a pivotal moment in shaping their respective futures.
