In a significant development for the New York Mets, owner Steve Cohen has intensified efforts to re-sign star first baseman Pete Alonso following the Toronto Blue Jays’ withdrawal from pursuing the slugger. Alonso, who became a free agent after the 2024 season, has been a cornerstone for the Mets since his debut in 2019, earning multiple All-Star selections and consistently ranking among the league’s top home run hitters.
Contract negotiations between Alonso and the Mets have been ongoing, with the team reportedly offering a three-year deal in the range of $68 million to $70 million, which Alonso’s camp declined. Cohen expressed his frustration with the process, describing the negotiations as “exhausting” and indicating that the proposals received were heavily skewed against the team. He emphasized the challenge of fitting Alonso into an already expensive roster and acknowledged the possibility of moving forward without him if no agreement is reached.
The Blue Jays had emerged as a potential suitor for Alonso, viewing him as a fallback option. However, recent reports suggest that Toronto has cooled its pursuit, focusing instead on bolstering their starting pitching. This shift has provided the Mets with a renewed opportunity to secure Alonso’s services without immediate competition
Within the Mets organization, there is a strong desire to retain Alonso. President of Baseball Operations David Stearns has publicly stated the team’s interest in bringing Alonso back, highlighting his significant contributions both on and off the field
As the offseason progresses, the Mets are expected to continue their pursuit of Alonso, aiming to reach a mutually beneficial agreement that secures his place in the team’s future. The resolution of these negotiations will play a crucial role in shaping the Mets’ roster and competitive prospects for the upcoming season.
