The No. 1-ranked Auburn Tigers proved once again why they are the top team in the nation, as Johni Broome led the charge with a dominant performance in an 87-74 victory over LSU on Tuesday night. The Tigers’ star forward recorded a game-high 26 points and pulled down 16 rebounds, setting the tone on both ends of the floor.
Broome’s commanding presence in the paint was too much for LSU to handle, as he scored efficiently around the rim and controlled the glass with ease. The 6-foot-10 junior shot 11-of-17 from the field and added three blocked shots, further solidifying his reputation as one of the premier big men in college basketball.
“It all starts with Johni,” said Auburn head coach Bruce Pearl. “He’s been a leader for us all season, and when he plays with this level of energy, it makes a huge difference. He was aggressive, played with great composure, and really set the tone inside.”
Auburn (21-2, 9-1 SEC) wasted no time establishing their dominance, jumping out to an early lead behind Broome’s relentless effort in the paint. LSU (15-7, 5-5 SEC) struggled to contain Auburn’s size and physicality, allowing the Tigers to dictate the tempo from start to finish.
Despite LSU’s attempts to rally behind guard Jalen Cook’s 20-point effort, Auburn’s balanced attack proved too much. The Tigers had four players score in double figures, with guards K.D. Johnson and Tre Donaldson providing key offensive sparks, contributing 15 and 13 points, respectively.
Auburn’s suffocating defense also played a crucial role in the victory, forcing 14 turnovers and limiting LSU to just 41.8% shooting from the field. Broome’s defensive presence deterred LSU from attacking the rim, while Auburn’s perimeter defenders applied relentless pressure throughout the contest.
With the win, Auburn extended its home winning streak to 15 games and further strengthened its hold atop the SEC standings. The Tigers continue to make their case as the best team in the country, fueled by Broome’s stellar play and a well-rounded roster capable of making a deep NCAA Tournament run.
“This team is special,” Broome said after the game. “We’re locked in, playing for each other, and just focused on taking it one game at a time. The goal is to keep improving and make sure we’re at our best come March.”
Auburn will look to carry its momentum into its next matchup against a tough Tennessee squad, while LSU aims to regroup and bounce back in its upcoming contest against Arkansas. If Broome continues to dominate at this level, the Tigers may be on their way to a historic season.
