Though the Philadelphia Phillies kept a low profile during the offseason, the organization remains optimistic that its strategic roster adjustments will bolster their pursuit of a World Series title in 2025. Veteran outfielder Nick Castellanos has voiced strong approval of the team’s new acquisitions, emphasizing their potential to elevate the club after a heartbreaking exit in the 2024 NLDS.
Despite finishing with baseball’s second-best record in 2024, the Phillies stumbled late in the season and fell short in the playoffs. The offseason saw the departure of key bullpen arms Carlos Estévez and All-Star Jeff Hoffman, but Philadelphia responded by signing former Blue Jays closer Jordan Romano, Twins outfielder Max Kepler, and trading for Marlins left-hander Jesús Luzardo.
Castellanos, a cornerstone of the Phillies’ lineup, praised the new additions in a conversation with On Pattison’s Tim Kelly: “Solid moves overall. Romano, when healthy, has been a tough opponent. Luzardo brings that same competitive edge, and Kepler’s a proven veteran hungry to win. Combining their strengths makes us better,” he said.
New Faces, High Hopes
– Jordan Romano: The two-time All-Star (2022, 2023) struggled with a right elbow injury in 2024, limiting him to just 13.2 innings. Philadelphia is banking on the 32-year-old rediscovering his form to bolster a bullpen missing Hoffman and Estévez.
– Jesús Luzardo: Acquired from Miami, the 27-year-old lefty aims to rebound after a back injury restricted him to 12 starts in 2024. His standout 2023 season (3.58 ERA, 208 strikeouts) hints at his upside.
– Max Kepler: The 10-year Twins veteran brings power (six seasons with 17+ HRs, including a career-high 36 in 2019) and consistency. While his batting average fluctuates, he’s expected to solidify left field.
Critics argue the Phillies didn’t match the Dodgers’ aggressive offseason, but the team believes its mix of seasoned talent and calculated risks keeps them in contention. With their championship window narrowing for the current core, Philadelphia is betting on health, resurgence, and veteran hunger to deliver a long-awaited title.
