Florida State’s 2026 recruiting efforts are gaining momentum, with two early commitments secured in recent months and the program actively pursuing top-tier talent nationwide. However, the Seminoles faced a setback this week as four-star defensive end Jamarion Matthews opted to join Alabama instead of FSU, LSU, or Clemson.
Matthews, a coveted edge rusher, announced his decision Friday following a junior day visit to Alabama earlier in June—his final campus tour before committing. The Crimson Tide’s recruitment push edged out competitors, including Florida State, which had extended an offer to Matthews during his January visit to Tallahassee for a junior day event.
While Matthews’ early commitment gives Alabama a key win, the nature of the recruiting cycle leaves room for potential shifts. The standout defender may still take official visits to other schools this summer or fall, leaving the door open for programs like Florida State to re-engage.
The Seminoles aim to leverage the expertise of new defensive line coach Terrance Knighton, who built a strong reputation at Nebraska by attracting high-caliber recruits. Knighton’s track record raises optimism that he can bolster FSU’s defensive recruitment strategy, potentially swaying prospects like Matthews in the future. For now, though, the focus remains on maintaining momentum in a competitive 2026 class.
