Adding to their woes, Anthony Gordon received a straight red card in the final moments of extra time, leaving his availability for the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool in serious doubt. The winger now faces a potential three-match suspension, with only a successful appeal giving him a chance to play at Wembley.
As Newcastle reflect on their disappointment, Hurzeler’s Brighton continue their winning momentum. This latest triumph marks their fifth consecutive victory, with the manager expressing his pride in the team’s performance.
“It was a very emotional game,” Hurzeler told Match of the Day. “There were lots of ups and downs, but the key was staying together and keeping calm. We focused on our solutions, and in the second half, we were very dominant. We suffered a little when we received the red card, but overall, it was a great performance.”
Newcastle, now with five home defeats this season, have eight days to regroup before their Premier League clash against West Ham at the London Stadium. That game comes just six days before their highly anticipated Carabao Cup final against Liverpool—a side that recently handed them a comprehensive defeat. Meanwhile, the Magpies are also awaiting further medical evaluation on Lewis Hall, who missed the Brighton match due to injury.
