Nottingham Forest had a quiet January transfer window, but securing new contracts for two key players was a significant move for the club.
Unlike previous windows, there was no major recruitment drive, with young defender Tyler Bindon being the only signing—immediately loaned back to Reading. However, the decision to extend the contracts of striker Chris Wood and centre-back Murillo was a strong statement of intent.
Wood, who was set to become a free agent this summer, will now remain at the City Ground until 2027. Meanwhile, Murillo, originally contracted until 2028, has extended his deal to 2029.
With the summer transfer window approaching, Forest have more contract decisions to make. Here’s a look at the players with just a few months left on their current deals:
Wayne Hennessey
Aside from signing Bindon, Forest’s only other winter window move was re-signing back-up goalkeeper Hennessey on a short-term contract. The Welsh international remains a valued and experienced presence in the squad. If he stays beyond this season, it could be in a coaching capacity rather than as a player.
Ola Aina
The full-back’s contract is set to be extended automatically for another year, but discussions have been ongoing regarding a longer-term deal. Head coach Nuno Espírito Santo has expressed confidence in reaching a positive outcome, and Aina has shown a willingness to stay. However, finalizing the deal quickly is now a priority.
Harry Toffolo
Toffolo has been a well-liked and professional presence at the club over the past three years, consistently performing well when called upon. However, with limited game time this season and left-back likely to be reassessed in the summer, a departure seems likely—though he would leave with best wishes.
Willy Boly
Forest have the option to extend the defender’s contract for another year, but speculation about a potential move to Saudi Arabia has emerged. Boly, who has been linked with Al Riyadh—managed by former Forest boss Sabri Lamouchi—will play an important role in the squad’s push for European football this season. However, a summer exit wouldn’t be surprising.
Alex Moreno
Early in the season, making Moreno’s loan move from Aston Villa permanent seemed an easy decision. He was a regular starter and put in solid performances. However, he has since dropped down the pecking order behind Neco Williams. While Forest have the option to sign him, his future remains uncertain, especially amid reports linking him with a return to Real Betis.
Jonathan Panzo
Since joining Forest in January 2022, Panzo has had limited opportunities to prove himself. A series of loan spells have restricted his first-team chances, with just one senior appearance for the Reds. His future at the club remains in doubt.
As the summer transfer window nears, Nottingham Forest must carefully navigate these key contract decisions to shape their squad for the future.
