Taking over for a legendary coach is always a challenge, and Kalen DeBoer faced exactly that when he was hired to lead the Alabama Crimson Tide in 2024. DeBoer stepped in following the departure of Nick Saban, widely regarded as one of the greatest college football coaches of all time.
Saban coached Alabama from 2007 to 2023, winning six national championships with the program, in addition to another at LSU. However, DeBoer’s first season didn’t go as expected.
The Crimson Tide finished with a 9-4 record, their worst season since Saban’s first year in 2007. On The Paul Finebaum Show, SEC Network analyst Paul Finebaum was asked whether DeBoer’s job could be in jeopardy if Alabama loses its season opener against Florida State. Finebaum’s response was clear.
“The answer to that is a most emphatic, yes,” Finebaum stated.
Florida State is also coming off a tough season. After beginning the year ranked No. 10, the Seminoles finished with a disappointing 2-10 record. Both teams will be looking for a strong start to build momentum for 2025.
Finebaum’s stance remains consistent with his previous remarks. He has highlighted growing frustration among Alabama fans, noting that patience is wearing thin. If the team doesn’t show improvement in 2025 or struggles early in the season, Finebaum believes DeBoer could be on the hot seat. Alabama’s season opener against Florida State is set for Aug. 30.
