BREAKING NEWS: Leeds United’s Former Coaching Target Hit with a Stunning Nine-Month Ban

Leeds United’s search for Marcelo Bielsa’s successor in 2022 played a major role in the club’s eventual relegation to the Championship. Several high-profile names were linked with the role alongside Jesse Marsch, including Portuguese manager Paulo Fonseca.

Fonseca, now managing Lyon, was between jobs in February 2022 after leaving Roma and before taking charge at Lille that summer. Speaking at a TransferRoom Conference last year, former Leeds director Victor Orta reflected on their meeting with Fonseca.

“It was, to be honest, a really good meeting,” Orta said. “These first interviews are like first dates—you talk about how amazing the club, chairman, fans, and city are. In Seville, it’s easier than it was at Leeds.

“But then, the coach explains their work ethic, leadership, and connection with players. It’s a process where clubs need to gather more information, including opinions from players and directors who have worked with the candidate.”

Fonseca’s weekend victory with Lyon against Brest was overshadowed by a heated confrontation with referee Benoit Millot. The 52-year-old reacted angrily as Millot reviewed a VAR check for a Brest penalty—ultimately not given—leading to Fonseca’s dismissal.

His actions have now resulted in an unprecedented nine-month ban, as reported by the BBC. The French Professional Football League has ruled that Fonseca is barred from the bench, officials’ dressing rooms, and any official match duties until November 30. Additionally, he cannot enter the team dressing room, pitch, tunnel, or related corridors until September 15.
