The Houston Astros have made a move to shore up their bullpen, officially signing left-hander Jalen Beeks. While the addition provides some depth, it does little to resolve the lingering question: who will bridge the gap between their dominant late-inning duo of Bryan Abreu and Josh Hader?
Beeks, a six-year MLB veteran, spent last season with the Rays and Rockies, posting mixed results. His ability to handle both short relief and bulk innings makes him a flexible option, but he isn’t the high-leverage arm many expected Houston to pursue. With Ryne Stanek departing in free agency and Kendall Graveman sidelined due to shoulder surgery, the Astros still lack a clear-cut setup option.
For a team with championship aspirations, relying solely on Abreu and Hader to carry the late innings could be a risky strategy. The front office may be feeling the pressure to address this void, especially with spring training approaching and limited impact arms remaining on the market. The Beeks signing is a step, but Houston still has work to do if they want a fully fortified bullpen come Opening Day.
