The Pittsburgh Steelers’ speculated interest in New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr has come to an abrupt end following a significant contract adjustment. Carr recently restructured his deal with the Saints, converting nearly $30 million of his 2024 salary into future obligations, a move that grants the team crucial salary cap relief and solidifies Carr’s place on their roster.

At last week’s NFL Combine, Saints general manager Mickey Loomis publicly backed Carr, emphasizing confidence in his ability to lead the team to success. This endorsement aligned with the Saints’ decision to retain him, closing the door on any potential release.

Carr’s 2024 season was cut short by a hand injury, limiting him to 10 starts (5-5 record) where he tallied 2,145 passing yards, 15 touchdowns, and just five interceptions. Had he been waived, the Steelers—currently navigating a shrinking quarterback market—might have pursued him.

With Carr now unavailable, Pittsburgh’s options grow thinner. Uncertainty continues to cloud their 2025 quarterback plans, particularly as speculation swirls around Chicago Bears’ Justin Fields and his potential landing spots. For now, the Steelers’ search for a clear answer under center remains unresolved.
