The Denver Nuggets pulled off an impressive road win against the Golden State Warriors, despite missing key players Nikola Jokic, Jamal Murray, and Christian Braun. While this was a success for the team, it left many fans disappointed—especially those hoping to see these stars play live or on television.
ESPN’s Tim Bontemps didn’t hold back on Get Up, stating, “It’s a terrible look for the league. This is exactly why the NBA created the player participation policy. They made rules specifically to ensure that star players compete in nationally televised games, especially on the road.”
He further criticized the decision, saying, “The Nuggets could have planned better. They play the Washington Wizards—the worst team in the league—at home on Saturday. That would have been a better game to rest their stars, keeping them ready for this matchup and Wednesday’s game against the Lakers.”
His frustration is understandable. The NBA has struggled with load management, often failing to showcase its top talent. Enforcing stricter participation rules could help solve the problem.
However, blaming teams for winning games is tricky. While fan entertainment is important, the Nuggets’ priority is maintaining a healthy, competitive roster for the playoffs while following league rules. If they finish the week with three wins and well-rested stars, their approach will have worked. Plus, Jokic playing in Wednesday’s nationally televised game against the Lakers might help ease concerns over this decision.
