The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly eyeing a former two-time MVP as their next major acquisition in the 2025 offseason.
Their recent blockbuster trade for Luka Dončić shocked the NBA, as many believed the 25-year-old, five-time All-NBA guard was untouchable. With that move, the Lakers proved they could land even the most unlikely stars—fueling speculation about their next big target.
According to Bleacher Report, the Lakers could pursue Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo.
“The Lakers already landed a dream target in Luka Dončić, but they’re not stopping there. If Antetokounmpo demands a trade, a package of salaries, talent, and draft picks could bring him to Los Angeles. It’s a long shot, but he belongs on any wish list.”
More realistic options include Utah Jazz center Walker Kessler and former Mavericks big man Daniel Gafford, both of whom would help address the Lakers’ need for a dominant center.
A Giannis trade as soon as next summer seems unlikely, even if his situation in Milwaukee deteriorates. The 30-year-old is still performing at an elite level, averaging 30.2 points, 12.0 rebounds, and 6.0 assists per game.
The Bucks may resist trading him to the Lakers if they believe he’s angling for a move to L.A. However, with his contract expiring in 2028, Antetokounmpo holds significant control over his future. If he chooses to join the Lakers in free agency, the earliest that could happen is 2027.
A Dončić-Antetokounmpo duo would be a dominant force, especially if Giannis transitions to a full-time center role. If LeBron James takes a pay cut to make room for him, the Lakers could be poised for an incredible 2025-26 season.
