The Chicago Blackhawks’ struggles continued on Tuesday night as they fell 6-2 to the Seattle Kraken, extending their losing streak to five games. While the loss itself was frustrating, it was a missed goal review in the first period that left Blackhawks captain Nick Foligno voicing his frustration after the game.
Chicago, now 20-39-9 with 49 points, remains 31st in the NHL standings, ahead of only the San Jose Sharks (45 points). However, the game started with promise as the Blackhawks jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first period, fueled by a determined offensive effort. But just when it seemed like Chicago might build on their momentum, a critical moment changed the course of the game.
Late in the first period, amidst a flurry of action in front of the Kraken net, Foligno believed he had pushed the puck across the goal line. But to his surprise — and that of the Blackhawks bench — the officials ruled it no goal without initiating a review. The decision stood, and moments later, Seattle took full advantage of the shift in momentum by responding with six unanswered goals to secure a commanding victory.
After the game, Foligno didn’t hold back his disappointment. “It’s tough when you battle that hard and feel like you deserve a look at a play like that,” he said. “We needed that goal to keep the momentum going, and it felt like the game turned after that.”
The missed review proved costly for a Blackhawks team desperate for a win as they try to salvage a difficult season. To add to the bittersweet night, rookie sensation Connor Bedard made history by becoming the youngest player in franchise history to record 60 points in a season. But even Bedard’s milestone couldn’t mask the frustration surrounding another missed opportunity for Chicago.
As the Blackhawks look to snap their skid and regain some confidence, Foligno’s frustration serves as a reminder of how critical key moments can be — especially for a young, rebuilding team still learning how to close out games. With just a handful of games left in the season, Chicago will need to find a way to stay focused and fight through adversity as they build toward the future
