The Pittsburgh Steelers are leaving no stone unturned as they navigate a murky quarterback situation. With future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers still mulling his next move, the Steelers are bracing for multiple outcomes. Whether Rodgers opts to take his talents to the New York Giants, shock the league by retiring, or hold out for a potential opportunity with the Minnesota Vikings, Pittsburgh is determined not to be left empty-handed.
Enter Kirk Cousins.
The 36-year-old quarterback, recently benched by the Atlanta Falcons in favor of rookie Michael Penix Jr., is eager for a fresh start. Penix, selected by Atlanta as the No. 8 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, has solidified his place as the Falcons’ future under center. Cousins, meanwhile, is seeking a new opportunity to prove he still belongs as a starter in the NFL.
According to Josina Anderson, the Falcons are willing to part ways with Cousins for a modest third-round pick—a reasonable price for a veteran quarterback with a track record of success. Though age and recent injuries may raise some concerns, Cousins’ experience and ability to manage an offense make him an attractive fallback option for the Steelers.
Financially, No Urgency for Atlanta
While rumors have swirled about a looming $10 million bonus, the reality is that Atlanta is in no rush to move Cousins for financial reasons. He’s already received $62.5 million for 2024, and although he’s owed $27.5 million fully guaranteed in 2025, that next $10 million bonus doesn’t become fully guaranteed until March 2026.
This gives the Falcons the flexibility to be patient with trade negotiations, ensuring they get value in return while giving Cousins a chance to find a landing spot where he can start immediately.
Steelers’ Calculated Approach
For the Steelers, acquiring Cousins would provide stability in a potentially volatile situation. While Rodgers remains their top target, Pittsburgh understands the importance of having a reliable Plan B. Cousins, a four-time Pro Bowler, may not bring the same ceiling as Rodgers, but he offers a steady hand that could keep the Steelers competitive in a tough AFC North.
As the clock ticks on Rodgers’ decision, Pittsburgh is staying proactive, ensuring they aren’t left scrambling should their primary plan fall through. Cousins, with his experience and leadership, could be just the insurance policy they need.
