BREAKING NEWS: The Meaning Behind Coco Gauff’s ‘When I Die’ Victory Message at the Miami Open & Its Florida Connection

Coco Gauff paid tribute to Florida by signing the camera with lyrics from a song by Florida-based artist Dominic Fike after her second-round win at the Miami Open. The 21-year-old is now preparing for her next match in the tournament.

Gauff secured a victory over Maria Sakkari with a score of 6-2, 6-4, advancing to the third round, where she will face Magda Linette on March 23, 2025. After her win, she wrote a message on the camera that read:

“When I die bury me in the sun – Fike.”

The line comes from Dominic Fike’s song Sunburn and reflects Gauff’s deep connection to Florida, as both the song and artist are rooted in the state.

Later, Gauff corrected a minor mistake in the lyrics. Instead of “lay,” she mistakenly wrote “bury.” She acknowledged the error on her Instagram story, sharing a photo of herself signing the camera along with the caption:

“Lol lay **** not bury.”

Beyond her performance on the court, Gauff also made headlines by revealing in a post-match interview that her mystery boyfriend had chosen the color of her nails.

Following her victory, Gauff spoke with the Tennis Channel about playing under pressure in front of her family and friends. She emphasized that her focus was on enjoying the game rather than letting the pressure affect her performance.

“Obviously, you have the pressure, with family and friends here, you want to perform well in front of them,” Gauff said. “The goal today was to go out there and have fun on the court. That’s how I feel like I’m playing—just trying to be loose. In the past, there was a little bit of pressure playing at home, but I think I play my best tennis when I’m relaxed. That’s what I was trying to emulate today.”

Gauff has made history as the youngest player since Garbiñe Muguruza (2012-2013) to reach the last 16 in consecutive Miami Open tournaments.
