Cincinnati Reds Lock Up Catcher: Newly Acquired Catcher Jose Trevino Agree to Three-Year Contract Worth $14,925,000

The Cincinnati Reds have solidified their catching position by signing newly acquired Jose Trevino to a three-year contract worth $14.925 million. The agreement, finalized Thursday, adds $11.5 million in guaranteed money and positions Trevino as the team’s primary catcher heading into the 2025 season.

Details of the Deal

Trevino, 32, was acquired from the New York Yankees in December in exchange for reliever Fernando Cruz and catcher Alex Jackson. Initially, Trevino avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $3.425 million contract, which would have made him a free agent following the conclusion of the 2025 World Series. However, the new extension includes guaranteed salaries of $5.25 million in both 2026 and 2027, along with a club option for 2028 worth $6.5 million. If the Reds choose not to exercise the option, Trevino will receive a $1 million buyout.

Stepping Up as Reds’ Starting Catcher

With Tyler Stephenson sidelined due to an oblique injury sustained during spring training, Trevino is set to open the season as the Reds’ primary catcher. Stephenson, who last appeared in a spring training game on March 11 before being scratched the following day, underwent an MRI on March 13, leaving his return timeline uncertain.

Trevino’s Recent Performance

Trevino played in just 74 games for the Yankees last season, hitting .215 with eight home runs and 28 RBIs. Despite a down year, the veteran catcher has shown flashes of brilliance in the past. In 2022, he was named an All-Star for the first time and earned a Gold Glove after playing a career-high 115 games. That season, Trevino hit .248 with 11 home runs and 43 RBIs, showcasing his ability to contribute both offensively and defensively.

Career Snapshot

Over his seven-year career with the Texas Rangers and the Yankees, Trevino has posted a .236 batting average with 32 home runs and 141 RBIs. Known for his strong defensive skills and ability to handle a pitching staff effectively, Trevino brings valuable experience and stability to the Reds’ lineup.

Impact on the Reds’ Future

By securing Trevino through 2027—and potentially 2028—the Reds have ensured consistency behind the plate while providing a reliable option as they look to remain competitive in the National League Central. Trevino’s leadership and defensive prowess could play a key role in guiding the Reds’ young pitching staff and stabilizing their defense throughout the coming seasons.
