In a surprising twist this summer, Nottingham Forest have reportedly entered the race to sign a high-profile striker who once stunned the City Ground.
Forest Targeting Shock Striker Signing
With just nine games left in the season, Nottingham Forest are in prime position to secure Champions League qualification. Recent victories over Manchester City and Ipswich Town have strengthened their chances, and as their European hopes grow, transfer speculation is ramping up.
Big names like Viktor Gyökeres have already been linked with the club in what could be one of the standout moves of the summer. The Sporting CP striker is among the most clinical finishers in European football, and if Forest secure a Champions League spot, they could realistically compete for his signature.
Regardless of whether Gyökeres is the final choice, bolstering Nuno Espírito Santo’s attacking options appears to be a priority. While Chris Wood has been outstanding this season, his long-term reliability remains uncertain at 33 years old.
With that in mind, Forest have now set their sights on a surprise target. According to TeamTalk, they are plotting a move for Darwin Núñez, who looks set to leave Liverpool after months of speculation linking him to Al-Hilal and other Saudi Pro League clubs.
Forest face competition from Atlético Madrid and potentially Newcastle United as they attempt to secure the Uruguayan striker’s signature and rescue him from his difficult spell at Anfield. With Núñez struggling to live up to expectations in his third season at Liverpool, incoming manager Arne Slot is reportedly ready to offload him this summer, having previously turned down offers from Saudi clubs in January.
However, what hasn’t worked out for Liverpool could prove to be a golden opportunity for Forest if they can unlock Núñez’s full potential.
Signing Núñez: A Major Gamble?
Liverpool originally signed Núñez for around £85 million in 2022, but his value has undoubtedly dropped due to inconsistent performances. Over three Premier League seasons, he has managed just 25 goals in 88 appearances—a stark contrast to Chris Wood, who has netted 18 goals in just 29 league games this season.
Despite his struggles, Núñez has already shown Forest fans a glimpse of his ability. Last season, he came off the bench to score a dramatic late winner at the City Ground, proving he has the talent to make an impact. Now, the question is whether Forest can take a chance on him and revive his career.
