The St. John’s Red Storm had high aspirations of reaching the Final Four in the 2025 NCAA Tournament. As the No. 2 seed, expectations were sky-high under head coach Rick Pitino. However, those dreams came to an abrupt halt after a 75-66 loss to No. 10 seed Arkansas in the second round. Despite the early exit, St. John’s showcased tremendous growth in Pitino’s second season, laying the foundation for an even brighter future.
That future got a significant boost just days after the tournament ended. St. John’s landed a massive addition by securing Arizona State transfer Josan Sanon, a five-star guard who was one of the most coveted players in the transfer portal. Sanon’s arrival immediately adds firepower to an already competitive roster, but the biggest news came shortly after — and it involved one of St. John’s most reliable stars.
Zuby Ejiofor Announces Return for Senior Year
Amid swirling speculation about his future, Zuby Ejiofor, the Red Storm’s second-leading scorer and First Team All-Big East forward, confirmed that he will return for his senior season. Ejiofor had the option to test the NBA Draft process but opted to stay, citing unfinished business with the Red Storm.
“I’m not ready to leave St. John’s and Coach P. We’ve got unfinished business,” Ejiofor shared on X (formerly Twitter), signaling his commitment to another year with the program.
Ejiofor, who began his collegiate career at Kansas before transferring to St. John’s, emerged as a dominant force in the paint over the past two seasons. His return solidifies the Red Storm’s frontcourt presence and provides Pitino with a proven leader who can anchor the team on both ends of the court.
Sanon and Ejiofor: A Dangerous Duo for 2025-26
With Ejiofor’s decision to stay and Sanon’s arrival, St. John’s is poised to be a serious contender in the Big East next season. Sanon brings elite scoring ability and dynamic playmaking, while Ejiofor’s experience and inside presence will give the Red Storm a balanced attack.
After a promising but ultimately disappointing end to the 2025 campaign, St. John’s enters next season with a reloaded roster and a clear mission: to take the next step and make a deep NCAA Tournament run. With key players returning and top-tier talent joining the fold, the Red Storm’s “unfinished business” might just lead them to the promised land.
