BREAKING NEWS: Mike Tomlin addresses state of Steelers’ RB Room Adjustments and Player Reactions to NFL Schedule Expansion Talk…

In Monday’s edition of “First Call,” Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin provided insight into the team’s revamped running back situation after losing Najee Harris in free agency. Meanwhile, former Steelers teammates exchanged thoughts on the growing debate over expanding the NFL schedule. Additionally, a former Steeler delivered an eye-catching highlight during the UFL’s opening week, and Western Pennsylvania will be well-represented in the upcoming NCAA Frozen Four.

Tomlin’s Confidence in New RB Duo

Although much of the conversation surrounding Tomlin’s comments at the annual league meetings in Florida focused on the Steelers’ ongoing quarterback dilemma, the coach also addressed the state of the running back position.

With Harris signing with the Los Angeles Chargers in free agency, Jaylen Warren is poised to take on a more prominent role. Tomlin expressed his confidence in Warren’s ability to handle an expanded workload.

“I’m very confident in Jaylen Warren,” Tomlin said, indicating that the young back is ready for a bigger role in the offense.

Complementing Warren is newly acquired free agent Kenneth Gainwell, who joins the Steelers after his stint with the Philadelphia Eagles. Tomlin praised Gainwell’s versatility and highlighted his ability to contribute in multiple areas.

“We value routine things like winning in a flat, whether you’re a ball carrier, ball catcher, or a tackler,” Tomlin said. “That’s a skill set that really stood out to us. But he’s got a well-rounded game. He’s a capable and willing special teams player. Plays a lot on possession-down ball. Excited about the acquisition of Kenny Gainwell.”

Tomlin also mentioned that Gainwell could be in the mix as a kick returner, adding another dimension to his skill set.

Drafting Another RB?

While Warren and Gainwell seem set to lead the backfield, Tomlin hinted that the Steelers could target a running back in the upcoming NFL Draft. He acknowledged that this year’s draft class offers notable depth at the position, suggesting that Pittsburgh may look to add another piece to solidify the running game.

Players Weigh in on NFL Schedule Expansion

The possibility of the NFL expanding the regular season beyond 17 games has sparked plenty of debate across the league, and some former Steelers players joined the conversation. While players enjoy the additional opportunities for exposure and revenue, concerns about player safety and the wear-and-tear of an extended season remain top of mind.

A few notable ex-Steelers voiced their opinions on social media, emphasizing the need for a balanced approach that considers player welfare while satisfying the league’s desire to grow its product.

Ex-Steeler Shines in UFL Debut

Elsewhere, a former Steeler made headlines in the opening week of the United Football League (UFL). His standout performance provided a reminder of the talent that continues to emerge from Pittsburgh’s system, even after their time with the Steelers ends.

Western PA’s Presence in Frozen Four

On the college hockey scene, the NCAA Frozen Four is set to feature a strong Western Pennsylvania influence. Several players with roots in the region will look to leave their mark on one of college hockey’s biggest stages, showcasing the continued growth of the sport in the area.

As the Steelers prepare for the next phase of their offseason, all eyes will be on how Warren and Gainwell develop within the revamped backfield — and whether the Steelers opt to add another playmaker to the mix during the draft.
