The New York Rangers may have secured a victory over the Minnesota Wild, but their defensive struggles were glaring. Throughout the game, the Blueshirts displayed moments of competent defense, only to follow them up with inexplicable breakdowns that left their star goaltender, Igor Shesterkin, completely exposed.
It was a frustrating night for Rangers fans, as the team alternated between solid defensive play and outright chaos in their own zone. The Wild capitalized on these lapses, often finding themselves in prime scoring positions with little resistance.
One of the most troubling examples came early in the game when Gustav Nyquist netted a power-play goal, a direct result of two Wild players being left alone in front of Shesterkin. That type of defensive collapse is unacceptable, especially on the penalty kill, where positioning and awareness are paramount.
While the Rangers ultimately found a way to win, their defensive inefficiencies nearly cost them. If these issues persist, they will become a serious problem against tougher opponents down the line. A win is a win, but if the Rangers want sustained success, tightening up defensively needs to be a top priority.
