The Denver Broncos have made a bold statement in their commitment to revamping their defense by securing one of the NFL’s rising defensive stars. In a blockbuster move that sent shockwaves through the league, the Broncos have signed safety Sam Franklin Jr. to a four-year, $96 million contract, making him one of the highest-paid players at his position.
Franklin, formerly with the Carolina Panthers, has developed a reputation as a game-changing playmaker known for his elite speed, physicality, and football IQ. His breakout 2024 season included multiple interceptions, key defensive stops, and a leadership presence that helped anchor Carolina’s secondary. Now, the 28-year-old safety heads to Mile High, where he’ll be a cornerstone of a defense looking to reestablish its identity.
“This is a massive move for us,” said Broncos general manager George Paton. “Sam brings a level of toughness and instinct to the field that’s hard to find. He’s exactly the kind of leader we want in our locker room.”
The deal includes $58 million guaranteed, and sources say Franklin was heavily pursued by several playoff contenders before choosing Denver. His decision was reportedly influenced by the chance to play under new defensive coordinator Vance Joseph and help the Broncos return to postseason prominence.
Franklin expressed excitement in joining the Broncos organization, saying, “I’m ready to get to work. The fans in Denver are passionate, and I’m here to bring energy, effort, and a championship mindset every single week.”
The signing comes as part of a larger strategy by Denver’s front office to reshape their defense following a disappointing 2024 season. Franklin is expected to pair with standout safety Justin Simmons, forming what could be one of the league’s most dynamic duos in the secondary.
As the Broncos look ahead to the 2025 season, the message is clear: they’re not just rebuilding—they’re going all-in.
