Jessica Pegula has shed light on her decision to end her doubles partnership with Coco Gauff. The American duo had a highly successful run, reaching the No. 1 spot in the doubles rankings and capturing five titles together. However, their collaboration came to a close following the Tokyo Olympics last year.
While Pegula has continued to compete in doubles with different partners, her recent campaign was interrupted when she was forced to retire during a match at the Miami Open. Currently ranked No. 3 in singles, Pegula revealed she is planning to significantly scale back her playing schedule.
This week, the 31-year-old is competing at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart, participating in both singles and doubles, partnering with fellow American Desirae Krawczyk in the latter.
Pegula heads into the tournament on a five-match singles winning streak, having recently claimed the title in Charleston. However, her doubles performances haven’t mirrored that success. In Miami, she paired with Ashlyn Krueger but had to withdraw from their second-round match.
Since ending her partnership with Gauff last summer, Pegula has played alongside various partners and has now confirmed that there are no plans for a reunion with Gauff.
“Coco and I played together a lot over the last few years and had some amazing results and memories,” Pegula said. “But with both of us doing well in singles, we didn’t want to keep up the same doubles schedule.”
Although Pegula is still open to playing doubles at select events, she made it clear that she will be limiting her appearances.
“The schedule becomes incredibly demanding,” she added. “I’ve barely played doubles this year and probably won’t participate in any of the Grand Slams.”
