In a bold and unprecedented move, the Vancouver Canucks have put their full faith in head coach Rick Tocchet by offering him a brand-new contract that would make him the highest-paid coach in franchise history. The offer replaces a previously held one-year team option on Tocchet’s deal, signaling a deeper commitment from the organization and a clear message about its direction moving forward.
During the team’s end-of-season media availability on Monday, Canucks president of hockey operations Jim Rutherford announced the decision not to exercise the team option for the 2024–25 season. Instead, Rutherford revealed the club’s intent to restructure Tocchet’s deal entirely, giving the veteran bench boss the freedom—and financial incentive—to steer the team without contractual uncertainty hanging over him.
“We don’t feel it’s right to have somebody here who may have his mind somewhere else—and I’d say that about anybody,” Rutherford explained, underscoring the organization’s desire for clarity, focus, and long-term stability.
The move effectively places the future of the Canucks—and Tocchet’s role in it—in the coach’s own hands. After guiding Vancouver through a resurgent season and earning praise for his leadership, Tocchet is now being rewarded not only with financial recognition but also with the confidence of a front office eager to keep building.
By offering this landmark deal, the Canucks are not just betting on Tocchet’s ability to lead—they’re investing in a culture change, continuity, and a foundation for lasting success.
Do you think Tocchet will accept the offer?
