The Philadelphia Eagles surprised many by selecting Alabama linebacker Jihaad Campbell at No. 31 in the 2025 NFL Draft. GM Howie Roseman hinted at using the versatile defender differently than expected.
Despite being drafted as an off-ball linebacker, Campbell’s background suggests he could play edge rusher. Originally recruited as a pass rusher at Alabama, injuries forced him inside – but his explosiveness remained evident.
“We see him affecting the quarterback and passing game,” Roseman said, calling Campbell a “top-10 talent” on their board. The Eagles believe his combination of speed (4.46 40-yard dash) and power makes him ideal for Vic Fangio’s defense.
This potential move addresses a key need. Philadelphia lost multiple edge rushers this offseason and struggled last year finding linebackers who could both rush and cover. Campbell’s versatility could solve both problems.
If deployed as a hybrid outside linebacker, Campbell would follow the mold of successful Fangio defenders like Andrew Van Ginkel. His ability to rush, drop into coverage, or blitz would add valuable unpredictability to the Eagles’ scheme.
The rookie is expected to be fully healthy for training camp following shoulder surgery. Whether at edge or inside linebacker, Philadelphia clearly views him as an immediate contributor.
