JUST IN: Blue Jays Respond to Max Scherzer Setback by Adding Depth with Familiar Arm…

As the Toronto Blue Jays navigate a rough patch in their 2025 campaign, the organization has taken a proactive step in response to recent injury news involving veteran pitcher Max Scherzer. After a promising start to the season, the Blue Jays have dropped five straight games, slipping to 12-13 and third place in the AL East. While the offense has sputtered at times, the pitching staff has held its own, currently ranking 10th in MLB with a team ERA of 3.79—no small feat considering the challenges they’ve faced.

A major blow came early in the season when Max Scherzer, one of the most high-profile offseason additions, exited his first start with right thumb inflammation. Despite undergoing treatment, including a second cortisone shot, Scherzer remains several weeks away from rejoining the rotation, according to MLB.com’s Keegan Matheson.

In the wake of this update, the Blue Jays made a subtle but telling move, signing pitcher Connor Overton to a minor league contract. Overton, who originally debuted with Toronto in 2021, has been assigned to Triple-A Buffalo. The 30-year-old brings a mixed track record—posting a 4.85 ERA over 59.1 MLB innings—but struggled in the minors last season with a 7.85 ERA across three levels in the Reds’ system.

While Overton isn’t expected to slot into the rotation immediately, his addition signals Toronto’s intent to shore up its pitching depth as it weathers the absence of Scherzer. With the team’s bullpen already logging significant innings and rotation questions looming, a reliable depth option—even a familiar one with something to prove—could be key in stabilizing the roster moving forward.

Will Overton be the spark Toronto needs, or is another move on the horizon as the Blue Jays try to stay competitive in the AL East?
