Lu Dort Addresses Ja Morant Injury After Controversial Play in Thunder’s Comeback Win

The Oklahoma City Thunder staged an incredible comeback in Game 3 against the Memphis Grizzlies on Thursday night, rallying from a 29-point deficit to secure a 114-108 victory. With this win, the Thunder now hold a commanding 3-0 series lead in the first round of the NBA playoffs.

However, the game took a concerning turn when Grizzlies superstar Ja Morant exited in the second quarter with a hip injury. The incident occurred after Thunder forward Lu Dort collided with Morant while attempting a defensive play. Replays showed Dort unintentionally undercutting Morant, leading to a hard fall. Officials reviewed the play but determined no flagrant foul was warranted.

Postgame, Dort addressed the situation, expressing concern for Morant’s well-being.

Tough play,” Dort said, per the Memphis Commercial Appeal. “I hope he’s okay.”

The Thunder’s defensive standout explained his perspective on the collision:

I was hustling back on defense, stopped quickly, and didn’t realize he was behind me. I lost my balance and tried to make a play on the ball, but we ended up colliding. I never meant for him to go down like that—I just hope he’s alright.”

Despite facing criticism from fans, Dort remained composed, emphasizing that the contact was accidental. He also revealed that he apologized to Morant immediately after the play.

People can say what they want,” Dort stated. “What matters is that Ja got up and finished his free throws. When he was at the line, I tapped him and apologized. It’s never good to see a great player get hurt, but I know my intentions were clean.

Though Morant didn’t respond verbally, Dort took his acknowledgment as enough.

He gave me a fist bump, and that meant something,” Dort said. “At least he knows I didn’t do it on purpose.”

Morant is set to undergo further evaluation on his hip, with the Grizzlies expected to provide an update soon. The injury could have significant implications for Memphis as they face elimination in Game 4.
