Sometimes, talented players don’t get the break they need — and that was the case for CamRon Valdez at Texas Tech. According to a report from RedRaiderSports.com, the veteran running back has entered the transfer portal, seeking a fresh start and a chance to finally realize his potential.
This marks the second time Valdez has explored a move. After the 2023 season, he initially entered the portal but ultimately chose to return to the Red Raiders. Unfortunately, that decision was hampered by a knee injury suffered in just the second game of the 2024 season, effectively ending his junior year almost before it began.
Valdez, a Rockdale, Texas native, was part of Texas Tech’s 2021 recruiting class. Ranked as a three-star prospect and the No. 32 running back nationally by 247Sports, he arrived in Lubbock with plenty of hype. His offer list was impressive, including programs like Arizona, Arkansas, Michigan, Missouri, Oklahoma State, Ole Miss, and many others.
However, his time at Texas Tech was marred by injuries, preventing him from ever securing a consistent role. Over four seasons, Valdez appeared in just 18 games, with 2023 being the only year he played in more than four.
Serving as backup to star running back Tahj Brooks in 2023, Valdez totaled 286 yards and a touchdown on 52 carries. Yet, a large chunk of that production — 111 yards — came in a single game against Houston in a 49-28 victory. Outside of that standout performance, he never topped 71 rushing yards in a game for the Red Raiders.
Looking ahead to 2025, Valdez faced an uphill battle for playing time. Texas Tech’s running back room is loaded, featuring Southern California transfer Quinten Joyner along with promising sophomores Cam Dickey and J’Koby Williams. That trio is expected to dominate carries this season, leaving little opportunity for Valdez.
Given the circumstances, it’s not surprising to see Valdez enter the portal once again as he looks for a fresh opportunity to get his career back on track after a devastating injury setback.
