The San Antonio Spurs are reportedly exploring one of the boldest moves in recent NBA history — a potential pursuit of both Giannis Antetokounmpo and Kevin Durant.
According to NBA insider Jake Fischer, the Spurs — fresh off a major acquisition of De’Aaron Fox — have emerged as a team linked to two of the game’s modern icons. San Antonio’s interest hints at a franchise determined to accelerate its return to championship contention, building around rising phenom Victor Wembanyama.
Giannis Antetokounmpo and Kevin Durant are names that command instant respect across the basketball world. Antetokounmpo, the two-time MVP and 2021 NBA champion with the Milwaukee Bucks, remains one of the most dominant forces in the league. This season, the Greek Freak averaged an astounding 30.4 points, 11.9 rebounds, and 6.5 assists per game. However, with Damian Lillard set to miss significant time next season due to an Achilles injury, there’s increasing speculation that Antetokounmpo might reevaluate his long-term future in Milwaukee.
Durant, meanwhile, remains a masterful scorer and playoff-tested superstar. Now with the Phoenix Suns after stops with the Thunder, Warriors, and Nets, Durant posted averages of 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.2 assists during the 2024-25 campaign. Despite his production, the Suns are expected to work with Durant on finding a trade destination this summer, given the team’s urgent need to retool its roster.
For the Spurs, a franchise synonymous with stability and excellence during the Tim Duncan–Tony Parker–Manu Ginóbili era, adding a generational veteran alongside their 20-year-old sensation Wembanyama would drastically change the Western Conference landscape. With De’Aaron Fox already providing All-Star production at point guard, the Spurs are positioning themselves as a new superpower if they can land another elite name.
Financially, the move wouldn’t be simple. Antetokounmpo is owed $54.1 million next season, while Durant is set to earn $54.7 million in the final year of his current deal. Yet with flexibility, assets, and a commitment to building a contender around Wembanyama, the Spurs could be a dark horse to make a historic splash.
While there are no guarantees in the trade market, San Antonio’s ambition is now clear. They’re not just building for the future — they’re aiming to dominate it.
