Canadiens Executive Says, He Has ‘No Concern’ About Players Who Are In 2025 Following The Statement For Owners And Coach
DETROIT (AP): Given Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine, Jeff Gorton, executive vice president of hockey operations for Montreal, stated that he has “no concern” about Canadiens front office personnel visiting Russia.
This week, Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes, scout Nick Bobrov, and special adviser Vincent Lecavalier caused a stir when they traveled abroad to see SKA Saint Petersburg, a KHL team that selected Ivan Demidov in the first round of the draft.
According to Gorton, the trip is solely for scouting.
“We have prospects all over the world, and basically, if we draft you or we sign you, you´re in our family and we´re going to go see you and watch you play,” he stated. “We will keep an eye on you and inform you of our thoughts regarding your play. This is exactly what it is. Kent is currently on a scouting trip.
Since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Russia and its ally Belarus have been prohibited from participating in all levels of the International Ice Hockey Federation events, and this ban will last until at least 2024–2025. Despite Russia’s reputation as a hockey superpower, the NHL also did not include the country in this winter’s 4 Nations Face-Off event
All travel to Russia is discouraged by the Canadian government “due to the impacts of the armed conflict with Ukraine and the risk of terrorism.” According to the U.S. government, “citizens may face harassment or detention by Russian security officials, arbitrary enforcement of local laws, limited flights into and out of Russia, and the possibility of terrorism.”
Gorton remarked, “He’ll be back soon; it’s a short trip.” “A chance for (Hughes) to see more than one player over there that´s ours.”
