The Pittsburgh Steelers’ loss to the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl XXX remains a painful memory for many fans. But according to a former Steelers player, the outcome could have been different if Pittsburgh had just one more quarter to play.
In a recent interview, former Steelers cornerback Carnell Lake reflected on the team’s 27-17 defeat, suggesting that momentum was on Pittsburgh’s side late in the game. The Steelers, led by quarterback Neil O’Donnell, had closed the gap after trailing 20-7 at halftime, making a late push before ultimately falling short.
“We had them on the ropes,” Lake said. “If we had just one more quarter, I truly believe we could have pulled it off.”
The game was marked by costly turnovers, including two infamous interceptions thrown by O’Donnell that led directly to Dallas touchdowns. Despite these setbacks, Pittsburgh’s defense stepped up in the second half, holding the Cowboys’ offense in check and creating opportunities for a comeback.
Former Steelers head coach Bill Cowher has also spoken in the past about how the game could have turned in Pittsburgh’s favor if a few key plays had gone differently. “We had control of the momentum late in the game,” Cowher once noted. “We just ran out of time.”
Dallas, led by quarterback Troy Aikman and Super Bowl MVP cornerback Larry Brown, capitalized on Pittsburgh’s mistakes to secure their fifth Super Bowl title. However, the Steelers’ strong performance in the second half left many players and fans wondering what could have been.
Lake’s comments add to the ongoing debate about that game and whether Pittsburgh could have orchestrated a historic comeback if given more time. While Super Bowl XXX remains a missed opportunity for the Steelers, it also stands as a testament to their resilience in the face of adversity.
