HOUSTON – The Houston Astros have solidified their outfield depth by reaching a mutual agreement with veteran outfielder Ben Gamel on a one-year, $1.2 million contract. The deal ensures Gamel’s return to Houston for the 2025 season, providing the team with a reliable left-handed bat and outfield versatility.
Gamel, 32, has established himself as a steady presence in the majors with his high-energy play, defensive reliability, and solid on-base ability. Since joining the Astros, he has contributed valuable depth to the lineup, particularly against right-handed pitching. His return adds another layer of experience to Houston’s outfield group, which already boasts a mix of young talent and seasoned veterans.
“Ben has been a great clubhouse presence and an important piece for our roster,” Astros general manager Dana Brown said in a statement. “We’re excited to have him back and expect him to continue playing a key role for us this season.”
In the 2024 campaign, Gamel posted a .247 batting average with a .335 on-base percentage, adding six home runs and 32 RBIs in a platoon role. While not a power hitter, his ability to get on base and work deep counts makes him a valuable asset, especially in late-game situations.
Gamel’s signing signals Houston’s commitment to maintaining depth in a competitive American League landscape. With injuries always a concern over a 162-game season, the Astros now have additional flexibility in the outfield rotation. Whether as a fourth outfielder or a left-handed option off the bench, Gamel’s presence ensures the team remains well-equipped for another postseason push.
The Astros will continue to assess their roster ahead of Spring Training, but keeping a versatile veteran like Gamel on board is a positive step as they aim to contend for another championship in 2025.
