Awoniyi is set to be available for Forest’s upcoming match against Newcastle after recovering from a facial injury sustained in the FA Cup against Exeter City. However, his chances of making the starting XI are slim.
This isn’t entirely Awoniyi’s fault, as few could have predicted Chris Wood’s outstanding form this season. Wood’s performances have been so impressive that Jamie Carragher included him in his best Premier League XI.
That said, Awoniyi has struggled to make an impact under Nuno Espírito Santo, managing just two goals compared to Wood’s 18. Despite this, Espírito Santo opted to keep him as Wood’s backup in January rather than push for a new striker. Whether this decision was a short-term solution or a genuine show of faith remains unclear.
Now, with reports linking Nottingham Forest to a summer move for Tammy Abraham, Awoniyi’s future at the City Ground looks increasingly uncertain.
Given TBR Football’s claims that Forest are among several clubs interested in Abraham, speculation over Awoniyi’s role naturally follows. To get more insight into how Abraham’s potential arrival could impact Awoniyi, Nottingham Forest News spoke with TBR’s Graeme Bailey.
