JUST IN: Alex Cora Shares Update on Red Sox Star Facing Health Scare

This isn’t the start to spring training that Boston Red Sox outfielder Wilyer Abreu had envisioned.

After an impressive season where he earned a Gold Glove and finished sixth in American League Rookie of the Year voting, Abreu was immediately sidelined upon arriving at camp due to a viral gastrointestinal illness.

The Red Sox have restricted him from baseball activities, and that remains the case as manager Alex Cora provided an update ahead of Tuesday’s exhibition game against the Atlanta Braves.

“He can work out. He cannot do baseball activities yet,” Cora said, per MassLive’s Christopher Smith.

Boston is taking a wait-and-see approach as Abreu recovers, with Cora noting that the illness caused him to lose weight. Abreu underwent additional lab tests on Monday as the team continues to monitor his condition.
