Philadelphia Phillies center fielder Johan Rojas is currently recovering from a shoulder injury, raising some concerns about the team’s outfield depth.
As the Phillies enter their second consecutive season with minimal offseason roster changes, the outfield remains an area of uncertainty. Nick Castellanos appears to be the only everyday starter, while Brandon Marsh, Rojas, and new acquisition Max Kepler are expected to fill platoon roles.
Rojas’ Injury and Recovery Progress
Phillies manager Rob Thomson recently revealed that Rojas injured his shoulder while sliding into a base during Winter Ball in the Dominican Republic. However, Thomson reassured reporters that the injury isn’t a major concern. “He’s going to be fine,” he said, per MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki.
Rojas, primarily known for his defensive skills, could provide a much-needed offensive boost to the Phillies’ outfield if he improves at the plate in 2025. His recovery is progressing well, and he has already appeared as a designated hitter in spring training games.
Outfield Depth Still a Concern
With Rojas expected to be available soon, his performance at the plate could determine how often he finds himself in the lineup. If he can establish consistency as a hitter, Thomson may have a tough time keeping him on the bench. Additionally, if Kepler or Marsh struggles with injuries, Rojas’ role could become even more significant in a relatively thin outfield group.
Kepler is slated to be the Phillies’ starting left fielder, but his injury history is a concern. In 2024, he was limited to just 105 games due to various health issues. If he struggles with durability or production again, Philadelphia’s outfield situation could become even more precarious.
For now, Rojas’ shoulder injury doesn’t appear to be a long-term issue, but his ability to step up offensively remains a key storyline heading into the season.
