Minnesota Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold warms up before a matchup against the New York Jets on Oct. 6 at London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
While Justin Fields appears to hold a slight edge over Russell Wilson as the Pittsburgh Steelers’ primary quarterback target for 2025, the team is reportedly weighing backup options. Meanwhile, insights into running back Jaylen Warren’s potential contract and trade possibilities involving Penguins forward Rickard Rakell round out the latest updates.
Here’s the breakdown in Monday’s edition of First Call.
Steelers’ QB Contingency Plans
ESPN analyst Jeremy Fowler suggests Fields is currently favored over Wilson in Pittsburgh’s quarterback deliberations. “There’s growing support within the organization for Fields, and mutual interest in a reunion exists,” Fowler noted Sunday. “While Wilson remains in the mix, the Steelers aim to solidify their plans soon.”
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport echoed this outlook, naming Saints quarterback Derek Carr as a potential fallback option if New Orleans releases him. “If Carr becomes available, teams like the Steelers or Titans could pursue him,” Rapoport stated. However, Carr’s contract complicates matters: Cutting him before June 1 would saddle the Saints with $50 million in dead cap, while a post-June 1 release would save $30 million but still incur $21 million in dead money.
Sam Darnold’s Uncertain Future
Should the Vikings part ways with Darnold, Fowler identifies the Giants, Raiders, Titans, and even the Steelers as possible suitors. Despite stepping in for injured rookie J.J. McCarthy and posting a 102.5 passer rating with 4,319 yards, 35 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions in 2024, Darnold’s recent performances (5.05 yards per attempt, 1 TD, 0 INTs in his final two games) leave his role in flux. The 27-year-old earned $10 million last season on a one-year deal.
Additional Notes
Running back Jaylen Warren’s contract projections gain clarity as he approaches free agency, while the Penguins explore trade interest in Rickard Rakell, with several teams reportedly eyeing the winger.
