JUST IN: Confusion as Top Keeper Set to Leave Nottingham Forest  Amid Contract Uncertainty

Wales is aiming to recruit Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey as a mentor for their emerging talent, leveraging his vast experience to shape the future of the nation’s goalkeepers. Hennessey, 38, holds 109 international caps—second only to Gareth Bale in Welsh men’s football history—and has been approached to join the under-21 coaching staff this summer. His current contract with Forest, signed in January, expires at the season’s end.

Wales U21 manager Matty Jones confirmed the approach, emphasizing Hennessey’s unparalleled expertise. “We’ve contacted Wayne to gauge his interest,” Jones stated, following the announcement of his squad for upcoming friendlies against Andorra and Sweden. The vacancy arose after Boaz Myhill, previously part of Wales’ youth setup, joined Tony Mowbray’s senior coaching staff at West Bromwich Albion.

“Wayne’s career experience is immense—exactly what our young goalkeepers need,” Jones added. “While timing is a factor, his insight could be transformative. Just as we’ve involved legends like Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey, Wayne’s journey to the top offers invaluable lessons for the next generation.”

Hennessey, sidelined from competitive play since representing Wales in October 2023, has recently served as backup to Forest’s first-choice keeper Matz Sels due to Carlos Miguel’s injury. Though yet to feature under manager Nuno Espírito Santo, his presence on the bench highlights his continued role within the squad.

As Forest weighs a contract extension, Wales’ proposal could mark a pivotal transition for Hennessey, blending his on-field pedigree with a new chapter in player development.
