The Denver Nuggets have officially ushered in a new chapter in franchise history, announcing the hiring of veteran coach Jeff Van Gundy as their new head coach. The move comes as the organization parts ways with longtime leader Michael Malone, a decision that signals both respect for the past and bold ambition for the future.
Van Gundy, a seasoned basketball mind with a wealth of experience at both the NBA and international levels, steps into big shoes. Malone, who coached the Nuggets for nearly a decade, leaves behind a legacy defined by consistent playoff appearances, a strong team culture, and the franchise’s first NBA championship in 2023.
Nuggets President of Basketball Operations Calvin Booth expressed confidence in the hire:
“Jeff brings a unique blend of toughness, strategic excellence, and proven leadership. He’s someone who understands how to win at the highest level and has earned the respect of players and peers across the league.”
Van Gundy last held a head coaching position with the Houston Rockets (2003–2007) and previously led the New York Knicks to the NBA Finals in 1999. In recent years, he has remained close to the game through his work with Team USA and as an ESPN analyst, staying up to date on modern tactics and player development trends.
In his introductory press conference, Van Gundy acknowledged the success of his predecessor while expressing his enthusiasm for the opportunity:
“Michael Malone did a tremendous job here. He set the standard. I’m honored to follow him, and I’m eager to build on what he started. This is a talented roster led by Nikola Jokić — and I can’t wait to get started.”
The decision to bring in Van Gundy was not taken lightly. According to league insiders, the Nuggets front office valued his defensive acumen, leadership ability, and playoff pedigree. His hiring signals the team’s commitment to remaining a contender in the ultra-competitive Western Conference.
The Nuggets’ core — including two-time MVP Nikola Jokić, Jamal Murray, and Michael Porter Jr. — remains intact, giving Van Gundy the tools to make an immediate impact. His challenge will be balancing veteran leadership with the development of younger talent and navigating the expectations that come with coaching a championship-caliber team.
As the Nuggets turn the page, all eyes will be on how Van Gundy reinvigorates a squad still in its prime. One thing is certain — Denver is aiming high and betting that a proven voice like Van Gundy’s is the key to unlocking the next great run.
