A little competition can go a long way—and in Tuscaloosa, it’s heating up fast. With former Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe preparing for the NFL Draft, the focus has now shifted to who will be his successor at one of college football’s most prestigious programs. The race to become Alabama’s next starting quarterback is officially on, drawing significant attention across the sport.
Currently, Ty Simpson, Austin Mack, and Keelon Russell are all locked in a fierce battle during spring practice. Each quarterback is aiming to separate himself and claim the top spot. According to SEC analyst Paul Finebaum, Alabama needs to settle on a starting quarterback sooner rather than later.
“Ty Simpson has been here for a couple of years. Austin Mack came with Coach Kalen DeBoer from Washington. But the name creating the most excitement is Keelon Russell, a five-star freshman,” Finebaum said during a SportsCenter appearance. “The issue is, nobody really knows who the guy is yet—and that uncertainty isn’t ideal for Alabama.”
Finebaum also noted the pressure already building around DeBoer’s tenure, despite a solid first year in which he defeated then-No. 1 Georgia. Still, missing the College Football Playoff is viewed as a major setback in Tuscaloosa, a place where expectations are always sky-high.
For now, all eyes are on Coach DeBoer as Crimson Tide fans anxiously await his decision on who will lead the team under center this fall.
